Our play-learning center consisting of our jenaplan school, daycare center, playgroup and before and after school care (VSO and BSO) is located in the Achtse Barrier district (Woensel-Noord) in Eindhoven. We use two buildings: A childcare location, containing the playgroup and the school building opposite. In addition to education, VSO and BSO also take place in the school building.
At the Spaaihoeve the children are in heterogeneous clusters. Children who differ in age and development, talents, intelligence and capabilities, background and culture. They learn from each other and with each other. They learn how to work together, respect and help each other and how to interact with each other. Children discover themselves and their possibilities and learn to take responsibility for each other and for their work, which increases their self-confidence. It is a natural process in which the optimal development of every child is central.
Our employees enthusiastically shape this education and guide the children through this process. We expect great participation from parents. We are jointly responsible for the development of the children.
Education in our play learning center is provided according to the Jenaplan principles. We are a Jenaplan school and are affiliated with the Dutch Jenaplan Association (NJPV). Want to know more? Then click on this movie.
Our education supports students in everyone's continuous/uninterrupted development. People naturally want to develop. This works if they are motivated and challenged. Children must be given the space to discover, experience and experiment in a meaningful, inspiring and safe environment. They learn to do something together, to coordinate with each other, to consult with each other, to understand each other. Children enter and leave school unevenly. Our education is therefore based as much as possible on the child's own character, talent and interests.
Education in our play learning center is provided according to the Jenaplan principles. Education is therefore shaped through four basic activities: conversation, play, work and celebration.
When developing the school building, the decision was made to provide as much space as possible for the children. That is why the children work and play in large clusters, in which four main groups with a total of about 100 children are located. The basis of every group is the circle and from there the children start working: with their own group leader, at a location of their choice or they follow the instructions of another group leader.
In each cluster you see a kitchen, a stage, all kinds of workplaces and discovery corners. Our library is in the hall.
you, me, we
unique together
'De Spaaihoeve, together unique!' With this slogan we emphasize that we value the uniqueness of every person and want to develop them. Everyone is welcome. We treat each other respectfully and openly, regardless of origin, language or religion. All students have knowledge of the world and we encourage learning from and with each other. We use the power of diversity. A rich diversity of students, parents and colleagues ensures greater (inter)cultural awareness
Within our education we enjoy the differences between the children. Children are therefore grouped into heterogeneous basic groups (group 1-2, group 3-4, group 5-6, group 7-8). It is precisely because of these differences that children learn from each other and everyone can discover their own talent. We want to connect our play learning center with the world around us. Discover together with the children how beautiful, special, fascinating and complicated that world is and understand it better and better. That is the core of our education!
You learn and live together. Our play learning center is a community in which we challenge, encourage and support each other. Where we are jointly responsible for each other and our environment and where we realize that you cannot learn if you are not allowed to make mistakes. In our play learning center you can be yourself.
At our school we pay attention to the results and growth of each individual child. We focus on the results that this child can achieve with his/her talent, character, intellectual abilities and background. The task of the group leader is to guide each child as much as possible in his/her growth in relation to himself/herself. In addition to the learning results, we also think it is important that attention is paid to core qualities such as collaboration, functioning independently, communicating, being flexible, being strong and coming up with creative solutions for varying problems. Through our way of working, the children practice all these qualities. In other words: our attention is focused on the personal development and individual opportunities of children in society. This is not always directly measurable in figures, but it is noticeable in personal development and your view of the world around you. We strive to allow all children at our school to work at their own developmental level.
We value all differences and promote cooperation. It is important to us that living and learning are not separated. What you learn influences your life and vice versa. World orientation is therefore the basis of our education. Children experience, discover and investigate the world, paying attention to their own self (micro), their own living environment and others (meso) and from the upper grades also the indirect environment (macro). By making children aware of their own attitudes from an early age, we create a place where we learn to live together and learn to live together. We teach our students to look critically at who they are and to actively broaden their perspective by meeting others out of curiosity. Education at Spaaihoeve is designed according to the Jenaplan principles.

We see children as equal discussion partners, who think about their own development and the design of activities. Conversations can take place individually or in groups. There is plenty of room for conversation during daily circle times. Children make plans during core group meetings. They inspire each other through speaking engagements, book circles, presentations on a theme or, for example, history circles. In addition, all kinds of issues that occur inside and outside the school are discussed. Discussions between the group leader and the student take place regularly during school hours. From group 3 onwards, parents are invited at least twice a year to attend such a meeting (outside school hours).
Children play naturally and therefore learn naturally. We provide space for this in all kinds of ways, not only in the lower grades, but also in the middle and upper grades.
This can be done, for example, by playing role plays, board games, playing with building materials or through sports. Play takes place during work, circle time, outside, gym class or in preparation for a celebration. If a certain skill can also be learned through play, children can choose that.
During working hours, children practice all kinds of knowledge and skills alone or together. These can be mandatory or own goals. Children can often determine - in consultation - where, how and in what order they work. This requires a large number of skills from children, such as planning, responsibility, independence, dealing with all kinds of materials and structures of work. Work takes place in different ways. For example, children practice on an iPad, are researching something, gain experiences, work on paper or learn through play. The core group leaders, teaching assistants and other supervisors have a lot of room for observation and guidance during working hours, often in groups and sometimes individually.
Celebrations are an essential part of our school. Celebration is a feature of everyday life. Celebrations are about sharing experiences and emotions together. Celebrations are not just parties such as Sinterklaas, Christmas and Carnival. Celebrating also means reflecting on the death of a grandmother or the illness of the father of one of your classmates.
Children also learn to show something: stand on stage and present something. Celebrations take place in the main group, in the cluster, for example at the weekly openings and closings and during celebrations for the entire school.
